On the 17th of September, the Republic of Belarus celebrates a public holiday - the National Unity Day. It was established by Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus No. 206 of June 7, 2021.
The date was not chosen by chance: the day became an act of historical justice for the Belarusian people, who were divided against their will in 1921 under the terms of the Riga Peace Treaty. The unity restored in 1939 allowed Belarus to survive the Great Patriotic War, take an honorable place in the international community, and become one of the co-founders of the United Nations.
Today the Belarusian people are united in choosing a strategic course for the development of a strong, sovereign and prosperous country. The establishing of the National Unity Day on 17 September underlines the continuity of generations, the firmness and self-sufficiency of the Belarusian nation and statehood.
A large number of socio-political and patriotic events, as well as cultural, museum and media activities are timed to coincide with the National Unity Day.
